Lombardy: European Hub for Pharma and the startup ecosystem

Lombardy is emerging as one of Europe's leading hubs for the pharmaceutical and Life Science sector, with Milan at its core.

According to the CPHI Annual Report Research, the region secured first place in small molecule production rankings, surpassing competitors like Île de France and Dublin.

In pharmaceuticals, Lombardy scored an impressive 9.7, outpacing historically strong regions like Baden-Württemberg in Germany. Milan will host CPHI Milan from October 8-10, 2024, attracting over 62,000 professionals.

This event will further solidify the region’s centrality and inject over €120 million into the local economy, accelerating industry growth through 2025.

The startup ecosystem is also booming. According to the LISTUP Observatory, the region hosts 27% of Italy's Life Science startups, with Milan accounting for 19% of the national total.

Lombardy's startups and SMEs have attracted significant investment, with the Med Tech sector alone quintupling its investment in the first half of 2024. Milan’s ecosystem is positioning itself as a global innovation hub, drawing in capital and expertise from around the world.

These results demonstrate the region's evolution toward a leadership role in the Life Science sector on a continental scale.
