Lombardy has a solid and diversified engineering system. The region has some areas with a strong vocation for mechanics and metalworking: a regional context with a high manufacturing value, complete with strong skills in the field of technological research. The region hosts:
- The Lombard Intelligent Factory Association, which promotes and facilitates research and innovation in the technological field and redevelopment practices for the manufacturing sector, in order to support and develop the leadership and competitiveness of the Lombard production system;
- The Lombard Cluster of Mobility Association, an organization that promotes and develops the competitiveness of the mobility industry in Lombardy, through research and competitive innovation based on the criteria of Smart Specialization

1st Italian region by number of patents in manufacturing technologies registered at the EPO (European Patent Register): 140 patents per million inhabitants.
The sector counts about 85,000 enterprises, employing more than 900,000 people for a total revenue of 257 bln.
The export total is € 163 bln.
With 66 bln of added value, Lombardy ranks as the first region in Italy .
